hi!

I'm Tom Brown, a 3D animator based in London.

I'm currently job hunting and available for freelance work as well. I love particle systems and crowd simulation - These were the basis of the final year project for my degree - but I'm also experienced in hard surface modelling, mechanical rigging and animation, material creation, and lighting. Aside from 3D animation I enjoy video editing, graphic design, stop-motion and 2D animation.

My current show reel. All created in 3ds Max and rendered with mental ray.

1. Moths Crowd Simulation
The moths are assigned a "seek" behaviour with the light as their target, which switches to an "avoid" behaviour when they reach it. Seemingly random flight paths were created from a vector field made from the chaotic surface normals of a duplicate light bulb with noise added.

2. Biolab: The Virus
Two shots from my final year project for my degree. A particle system was used for the blood cells and platelets.

3. Tunnel Explosion
Expanded from a tutorial by Pete Draper, the effect uses an animated self-illuminated displacement map. A particle system was used for the jets of water.

4. Space Shuttle Explosion
A particle system was used. The missile is spawned first, and its final location is used to spawn the explosions. A mesh bomb modifier destroys the model.

5. Monolith
High poly sci-fi model adapted from the 3D-Palace.com Obelisk tutorial. The top half was redesigned and a particle system added to enhance the blue energy core.
